Things to Do in San Antonio during Spring Break

Spring Break is right around the corner and luckily San Antonio has plenty of fun activities for you and the family to do, whether it is for a few days or the whole week! San Antonio is home of many unique attractions and significant locations that are a must see.

San Antonio Hotels

It is hard to predict weather in San Antonio during Spring break. San Antonio offers wonderful places to stay. Hotels with indoor heated pools are great for families. There are hotels near SeaWorld with indoor heated pools in our packages, which include the Courtyard Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Comfort Suites. Courtyard Marriott and Comfort suites have double queen beds with a sofa sleeper so this could accommodate up to 6 people. The Courtyard Marriott and Holiday Inn also offers shuttle to SeaWorld which will save you money from SeaWorld Parking.

If this is your first time in San Antonio, you may want to experience staying at the Downtown Riverwalk. We have several great family friendly hotels in a wide range of prices such as La Quinta and Suites near River Center Mall, Home 2 Suites Riverwalk, Hampton Inn and Suites Riverwalk, Red Roof Inn Downtown, Staybridge Suites near the River Walk, Hyatt Place Riverwalk, El Tropicano, and Wyndham Garden Riverwalk.

San Antonio Attractions

Here are some itinerary ideas of what your spring break may look like.

Day 1: SeaWorld

SeaWorld is one of the top family fun places to visit. This theme park is filled with animal shows, exhibits, and rides that are for all ages. There are two parks, SeaWorld and Aquatica, which both will take up most of your day. SeaWorld is the main marine-life park and Aquatica is the waterpark. It is recommended to plan accordingly, especially with the crowds during spring break. To maximize your time here, make sure to download the SeaWorld Maps online, as well as checking out their show times in advance. Another good tip is to plan on getting to the shows about 15-20 minutes early to reserve a spot.

There are a variety of exciting shows to see such as:

  • Ocean Discovery - A showcase of friendly beluga whales, energetic Pacific white-side dolphins, and beautiful macaws interacting with one another in a playful way.
  • Let's Play Together - A wonderful interactive show for young kids and Sesame Street pals while getting to play, dance, and sing along with Elmo and his friends.
  • One Ocean - An inspiring show that highlights killer whales and their impact on life under the sea, as well as educating the importance of sea preservation.
To get even a closer look with these awe-inspiring animals, SeaWorld has a few interactive experiences such as swimming with dolphins, belugas, or sea lions, as well as meeting penguins! For more information or to schedule a time, you can pay for a reservation on the SeaWorld website.

Aquatica is a popular waterpark to visit too. This waterpark is filled with thrilling water slides, to relaxing rivers and pools, and other fun play areas for the kids. However, the weather in San Antonio can be still pretty cool around spring break and with the water being cold, Aquatica may not be the best idea. Checking the weather beforehand should help decide if you should visit the waterpark or not.

A fun recommendation if you have little kids with you is the Sesame Street Bay of Play! This attraction is a great area for the children to play in. There's a nice playground, as well as a splash area, and rides. The kids may not want to leave this fun place once they arrive!

For dining options in SeaWorld and Aquatica, we recommend getting additional dining passes for the family on our website. There are a variety of tasty options for everyone.

Day 2: Downtown

For Day 2, you can have a day filled with many fun activities in Downtown San Antonio. The Riverwalk is one of San Antonio's most iconic places to go to. Especially if you are going to the Riverwalk for your first time, we highly recommend taking the 35 minute Riverwalk boat tour! This boat tour is great for checking out all the restaurants, shops, and other beautiful architecture along the river. The tour guides also give good recommendations and a little history about the Riverwalk which is interesting to learn. It is best to go on this boat tour in the morning or evening to avoid the sun or we suggest to bring a hat or sunglasses and water to keep cool.

Along the Riverwalk there are several places to hop on the boat tour. One of the main spots is located near the River Center Mall. From the food court inside, you will walk downstairs and go outside towards the Riverwalk. Then on the left side you will see an area where you can hop on the boat.

After the Riverwalk boat tour, a fun recommendation, if you have little ones, is to take them to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center, which is inside the River Center Mall. There are 10 different themed lego areas for the kids to enjoy, so plan on spending a couple of hours here if your children love building with legos.

An amazing place to check out in San Antonio is the one and only Alamo, especially if you enjoy learning about history. The Alamo is walking distance to the River Center Mall. The admission is free unless you would like to rent the 45 minute audio tour for $7 or $5 for military. This self guided audio tour is good for learning more about interesting facts and the story behind the Alamo. You may spend about 1-2 hours touring here.

Right across the street from the Alamo, there are 3 exciting attractions combos we offer in our custom package including Ripley's Believe It or Not!, Ripley's Moving Theatre, and Louis Tussaud's Waxworks. You will need at least 2 hours to enjoy all of the attractions.

A view you will not want to miss is going to the top of the Tower of the Americas. We guarantee you will have the best seat in the house for a beautiful view of downtown San Antonio. Surrounding this tower are beautiful waterfalls, which are great to take photos with. The tower is also a good walking distance from the Alamo or the River Center Mall.

Places to eat in San Antonio

In downtown San Antonio there are many delicious options for places to eat on the Riverwalk. There a different restaurants such as the Iron Cactus Mexican Restaurant, The Original Mexican Restaurant, RainForest Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Pizzarita's, Paesanos, and many more. There are also plenty of fast food restaurants in the food court area in the River Center Mall and in front of the Alamo. These places range from McDonald's to International Cuisine such as Chinese, Mediterranean, and Italian.

Extend your stay in San Antonio

Plan your 4-5 day trip: Six Flags & Zoo

If you would like to extend your stay here for 1 or 2 more days, you could visit additional theme parks such as Six Flags Fiesta Texas or the Zoo. This will depend if you are a ride or animal lover. There are free admission activities near the zoo such as the beautiful Japanese Tea Garden, as well as Brackenridge Park. Please check out a day at the San Antonio Zoo here.

New Braunfels- Natural Bridge Caverns

If you prefer a change in scenery, another lovely place to visit is the country side of San Antonio. There is a vibrant town, New Braunfels, where you can explore the caves of Natural Bridge Caverns, then afterwards, you could grab lunch or dinner at the Gruene Historic District. At Natural Bridge Caverns there is a Discovery Tour that takes you inside to see one of the largest caves in Texas. There will be great spots to take photos and you will also learn about how these amazing caves came to be. The tour takes about an hour and you will be walking about 3/4 of a mile, so we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes here. For more information on Natural Bridge Caverns, check out this blog.

Gruene Historic District

Next, if you would like to take time to visit the quaint little town of Gruene, it is not too far from Natural Bridge Caverns. Gruene Historic District has cute little boutiques and stores to shop at. There are also great local restaurants to eat at, such as The Gristmill, which is southern comfort food, The Riverhouse, which is american food, and the Gruene River Grill, which is also american food.

Schlitterbahn

If you are a huge fan of water parks, you cannot not miss Schlitterbahn, the hottest, coolest water park in Texas! Also one of the best water parks in the U.S. Schlitterbahn is famous for their thrilling water rides and pools, as well as recycling the natural water from the Comal River in different parts of the water park, which keeps the water at 72 degrees. There are many rides for all ages, from tube shutes, water slides, lazy rivers and much more. However during spring, there are only certain sections open of the water park where the water is heated. This sums up a 3-6 day trip to San Antonio for Spring Break! We have attractions and great hotel choices to build the best and affordable packages. We hope to see you soon!
